Gear Advisor: Lightweight Touring Splitboards

You’re covering serious ground — long ridgelines, multi-hour approaches, high elevation. Every extra 100g on your board costs you at the end of a 1,500m climb. This advisor helps you find a lightweight splitboard without sacrificing the downhill performance you worked hard to reach.

Step 1: How Much Does Weight Actually Matter For You?

Occasional touring: Under 2.8 kg is enough

You are here if: you do 5–15 day tours per season, mostly moderate terrain, and you’re not yet counting every gram. A mid-weight board with great downhill performance is the smarter trade-off. Board to consider: Amplid Milligram Split (approx 2.6 kg, carbon-reinforced, exceptional performance-to-weight ratio).

Committed tourer: Under 2.3 kg target

You are here if: you tour 30+ days per season, multi-day hut trips are your thing, and you’ve felt the difference between a 2.8 kg and a 2.2 kg board on a 4-hour skin. Board to consider: Weston Japow Split (ultralight carbon construction, flex 7/10, excellent in deep snow).

Endurance / ski mountaineering crossover: Under 1.9 kg

You are here if: you’re linking couloirs, doing speed ascents, or spending weeks in remote ranges. Downhill performance is secondary to getting there and back. Expect to give up some edge hold and float. Board to consider: Prior Spearhead Split (handbuilt in Canada, extremely light, uncompromising uphill efficiency).

Step 2: What Are You Sacrificing?

Priority What you give up Sweet spot
Max lightweight (<2 kg) Edge hold, durability, float in heavy snow Speed ascents, couloirs
Balanced (<2.5 kg) Minor flex difference vs heavier boards Most touring riders
Performance first (<3 kg) Nothing significant — this is the sweet spot Mixed resort + backcountry

Step 3: Construction to Look For

Carbon stringers reduce weight without sacrificing stiffness. Paulownia or poplar cores are lighter than bamboo or beech. Biaxial glass over triaxial saves weight but reduces torsional stiffness — fine for softer terrain, less ideal for icy steeps.
