You’re riding lines where a missed edge means a long slide. Steep and technical terrain demands specific board characteristics — and the wrong choice isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s unsafe. This advisor cuts straight to what matters.

Step 1: Define Your Steep

35–40°: Aggressive all-mountain freeride

You are here if: you ride challenging natural features but stay within manageable fall zones. You want confident edge hold and precise turn initiation. Board to consider: Jones Ultra Mountain Twin Split (flex 7/10, stiff tip and tail, excellent edge retention on hard snow).

40–45°: Classic big-mountain terrain

You are here if: you’re comfortable in couloirs, cliffy zones, and committing first-turn situations. Edge hold on hard pack is non-negotiable. Board to consider: K2 Excavator Split (flex 8/10, directional, aggressive sidecut for high-angle turns).

45°+: Extreme terrain

You are here if: you’re a highly experienced rider choosing lines that most people would ski. You need a board that doesn’t chatter at speed and locks in on bulletproof. Board to consider: Prior Spearhead Split or any custom/semi-custom board tuned for your weight and riding style.

Step 2: Technical Specifications That Matter

Step 3: Stance and Setup

For steep terrain, run your stance slightly more forward (15–20 cm from nose) to keep weight on the front foot and control the fall line. Binding angle of +24/+9 to +27/+12 works for most riders. Avoid setback stances — they reduce front foot control on the descent.
