Splitboard Interfaces Explained: Pucks, Karakoram & The Channel

You can buy the right board, the right bindings and the right boots, and still end up with a setup that does not work together. The mounting interface is where that happens, and it is the one part of a splitboard system that almost nobody explains before you have already paid.

The one distinction that clears up most of the confusion

People talk about interfaces as if it is one thing. It is two.

The board has an insert pattern. Holes drilled and threaded into the two halves at the factory. That is fixed for the life of the board.

The binding has a mounting system. Hardware that bolts into those inserts and gives you something to click into.

They are different halves of the same question, and the compatibility conversation is about whether they meet. Once you separate the two, most of the internet’s confusion on this topic evaporates.

Board side: the insert pattern

The Voilé-standard 3-hole pattern is the de facto standard, and has been for years. If you are looking at a splitboard from most manufacturers, this is almost certainly what you are getting. It is the reason the aftermarket works at all: a standard pattern means bindings from one company mount to boards from another.

The Burton Channel is the exception worth knowing about. Instead of threaded inserts, the board has a slot running along the mounting area. It is a genuinely different system, and it needs a Channel-compatible mounting solution rather than standard pucks. If you are buying second-hand and the board is a Burton, this is the first thing to check — not the last.

Proprietary patterns exist here and there. They are rare, and when they show up they narrow your binding choices considerably. That is not automatically a reason to avoid a board, but it is a reason to price the whole system before you commit to the board.

Binding side: the mounting systems

Puck systems are what most splitboarders ride. Two pucks bolt to each ski half; the binding slides on and locks down. Different manufacturers make pucks with different canting options and different tolerances, but the concept — and usually the fit — is shared. Simple, light, few moving parts, and the parts that do move are cheap to replace.

Karakoram hardware uses the same standard inserts but its own mounting and locking mechanism, built around a stiffer, more mechanically positive connection. More parts, more precision, more money, and a following of riders who will not go back.

The important point: both mount to the same standard inserts. The choice between them is about how you want the connection to feel and what you want to maintain — not about whether it will physically fit. We go through the options model by model in the splitboard bindings guide.

What actually has to match

Four things, in this order:

  1. Insert pattern to mounting hardware. Standard 3-hole to pucks or Karakoram: fine. Channel: needs its own solution.
  2. Binding size to boot size. The most common real-world mismatch, and the one that gets discovered on the first tour.
  3. Board waist width to boot size and binding footprint. Big feet on a narrow waist means toe and heel drag on hard snow. This is a board choice, not a binding fix — and it starts with knowing your boot size and last.
  4. Boot sole to binding and to crampons. If you plan to run ski crampons, check that they fit the binding you are buying — not the binding you already own.

Notice what is not on that list: brand loyalty. There is no requirement to run one company’s board with the same company’s bindings.

An honest note about our data

We are building a dedicated interface field for every board in the database, working from manufacturers’ published specifications one board at a time. It is not live yet, and we will not publish it half-finished. When we do, a board with no confirmed value will show nothing rather than a guess.

That is the rule we apply to every spec on this site: a missing value is more useful than an invented one, because you can go and check a missing value. You cannot check a number somebody made up.

When that field is complete, it becomes the backbone of a compatibility checker that will tell you whether a specific board, binding and pair of skins actually work together. That is the point of doing it properly first.

Before you buy

If you are buying a board and bindings in the same purchase, check the insert pattern before you check anything else — it is the only one of these four that you cannot fix later. Everything else is a matter of choosing the right size or the right accessory. The insert pattern is a property of the board you are about to own for the next five seasons.
