Every splitboard on this site carries a flex number. It is the second thing riders filter on, right after size. And it is the spec that means the least — until you know where it comes from.
Here is the uncomfortable part: there is no industry standard for flex. No test bench, no agreed load, no unit. One brand rates its line 1 to 5. Another uses 1 to 10 but never publishes anything below 4. A third rates each board relative to the rest of its own catalog, which means a 7 tells you where that board sits in their range and nothing about anyone else’s.
So when you compare a 7 from one brand with a 7 from another, you are comparing two opinions that were never meant to be compared.
What we do about it
Flex on this site is our number, not the brand’s. We normalise every board onto one 1–10 scale so that filtering actually means something. The method is deliberately conservative:
- We start from the manufacturer’s own published figure and convert it to a 1–10 base. A 1–5 scale doubles. A 1–7 scale maps proportionally.
- We adjust by at most one point, and only on construction evidence: carbon stringers, core profile, the stated rider weight range, and where the brand positions that model within its own line.
- We never adjust a number by comparing it to a rival brand’s rating. That stacks two unknowns and calls the result data.
- Where a brand publishes nothing, the field stays empty. We do not guess a flex.
That is a method with real limits, and we would rather state them than pretend to a precision nobody has. It is our judgment, not a measurement. We have not put every board on a test bench, and we say exactly how we work in our methodology.
What our scale means

What the database actually shows
Across the boards currently in our database with a published flex, the numbers land like this:

Median: 7. Range: 5 to 9.
Two things fall out of that, and neither gets said often enough.
There are no soft splitboards. Nothing in the database sits below 5. The whole category clusters medium to stiff, because a split board is already a compromised structure — cut a board down the middle and it loses torsional stiffness, so manufacturers build the halves stiffer to get some of it back. If you are coming off a soft resort board, the mellowest splitboard on the market will still feel like a step up in stiffness.
The middle is crowded and the edges are thin. Sixty-five of these boards are a 6 or a 7. If you know you want something genuinely stiff or genuinely forgiving, your real choice is much smaller than a hundred boards suggests — five boards at 9, seven at 5.
What this means for your board
Flex is not a quality score. A 9 is not better than a 5; it is a different tool, and the wrong one will make you worse at riding.
Two things decide which end you want.
Your weight against the board’s range. Flex and rider weight are the same conversation. At the bottom of a board’s published weight range, a flex 8 will feel like a plank you cannot bend — you will not get the board to work in soft snow. At the top of the range, a flex 5 will feel vague at speed.
What you actually ride, not what you aspire to. Stiff boards reward commitment: speed, edge pressure, decisive turns. If most of your days are variable snow at moderate pace, you will have more fun and be less tired on a 6 than on an 8, whatever the marketing says about charging.

The short version
The flex number on a brand’s website tells you where that board sits in that brand’s line. Ours tells you where it sits against every other board we have catalogued — using one method, applied the same way to all of them, with the arithmetic explained above. That is the whole reason our filter is worth using.
Filter the database by flex, and read the rider weight range next to it. Those two numbers together answer more than any adjective on a topsheet.
